Local entrepreneurs, mobile application developers, wireless mobility executives, and technology professionals filled the University of the Arts Hamilton Hall as Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic launched its 2010-2011 event season by tackling the controversial topic of the evolving mobile application ecosystem. Titled “Survival of the Fittest: Is your mobile app strategy DOA?” attendees heard a number of perspectives from mobile industry experts on the key issues facing businesses as they develop their mobile strategies.

Mobile Monday President Chuck Sacco welcomed the crowd and explained that attendees could provide feedback and submit feedback and questions in real-time using a beta version of Yorn on their mobile browser.

Issues addressed included:

Mobile Web vs. Mobile Apps: which will rule?

Is an app the right solution for everyone?

Are there are some cases where an app might make more sense?

The evening was keynoted by industry analyst Shiv K. Bakhshi, Ph.D. and moderated by renowned industry commentator Steve Smith. Bakhshi, Founder and CEO of Mobile Perspectives, kicked off the event’s content with a presentation titled “Mobility, Convergence & Confusion: Is there an app for that?” Bakhshi delivered a compelling presentation that helped provide the audience with industry and mobile device technology trends, discussed the convergence of devices, outlined the role of mobile platforms, analyzed evolving consumer behaviors, and discussed a few perspectives on how to decide on the best path to take for any business.

Bakhshi then gave way to the panel moderator, Steve Smith, Mobile Insider columnist for Mediapost and organizer of the OMMA Mobile shows. Following Bakhshi’s lead, Smith led a vibrant panel of industry experts who analyzed and attacked issues head-on. The panel included:

Rick O’Brien, President, Sempercon

Mark Spence, co-founder and General Manager, Transmogrify

A highlight of some of the questions addressed from direct audience participation included:

Right now the app development world appears very fragmented do you see a dominant player emerging to compete for market share and market consolidation?

What impact do you expect the Microsoft Windows OS will have over the next year, Also Is a Microsoft-Nokia alliance likely?

Is there a source of information associating mobile platforms with target app consumer demographics? For example, what platform do you target a fitness app versus a business intel app?

Do large enterprises have to implement a mobility platform so that legacy host apps can be extended effectively to a multi OS mobile device user community?

The Marketing and Mobile Technology event was held in partnership with Chariot Solutions and appRenaissance.

Mobile Web vs Mobile Apps: which will rule? Is technological Darwinism influencing the vast mobile ecosystem to adapt to the web while mobile apps fall prey to natural selection? Not likely, you may say. Conventional wisdom suggests we only have to look at Apple’s App Store to see that mobile apps are nowhere near extinct. And more recently Blackberry’s App World and Google’s Android Market make it seem like mobile applications are taking over.

And, doesn’t it seem like we have gone back fifteen years to a time when we were required to install packaged software? Hello! It’s 2010, who installs software anymore?

Interestingly, research shows that less than 5% of downloaded mobile apps are still being used 20 days after being downloaded… not a compelling case for apps reigning supreme.

However, there are some cases where an app might make more sense. What are those cases? Why are they special? Could these cases potentially gain more from going the mobile web route? As the various app stores duke it out, it goes without saying that mobile devices are becoming more robust in their browsing capabilities.

Key factors to consider are lower development and distribution costs, a greater potential market and a much easier means for people to find your site using any search engine.

The evening will be keynoted by industry analyst Shiv K.

Local entrepreneurs, wireless mobility executives, technology professionals and digital marketers filled the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia as Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic welcomed a record crowd to its annual “Marketing and Mobile Technology” event. With around 400 attendees, one of the area’s premier networking organizations demonstrated that Philadelphia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is a fundamental part of the region’s viability.

While approximately one in every five Americans uses a smartphone, the numbers at a Mobile Monday event are much closer to 100%. Leveraging this, registered attendees were prompted to take their seats for the panel presentation via a welcoming email message that many were seen viewing on various mobile devices.

Mobile Monday board member Chuck Sacco welcomed the crowd and explained that attendees could provide feedback and submit questions in real-time using a beta version of Yorn on their mobile browser.

The evening’s keynote speaker, Josh Kopleman of First Round Capital, offered a VC’s perspective on the current state of the mobile industry. He broke down mobile into three categories. First there are “cash flow businesses” which consists of about 98% of mobile startups. He then pointed to companies that are using mobile as a channel of customer acquisition – where mobile is just a one element of the strategy. Finally he touched upon mobile startups that are trying to create massive enterprise value – an area that Kopleman and other venture capitalists find intriguing and capable of delivering a strong return on investment.

Kopleman then gave way to the panel moderator, Jeannette Kocsis, SVP of Digital Marketing, The Agency Inside Harte-Hanks. Kocsis offered a basic overview of trends in the mobile space, noting that a staggering 4.1 billion SMS messages are sent each day in the United States. She then introduced a panel consisting of well-respected agency, brand and mobile technologist thought leaders. The panel included:

Drew Salamone, Director, Digital Media, NBC Universal

David West, VP Sales and Marketing, Pocono Mountain Convention and Visitors Bureau; Mobile Marketing Committee Chair for the Destination Marketing Association International

Steve Rockman – SVP Digital Strategy, The Star Group

Dan Goikhman, co-Founder, Mojiva

Paul Alfieri, Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Limelight Networks

Greg Yardley, VP Products – Ad Optimization and Co-founder, Flurry

Highlights of the panel discussion included:

Avoid SPAM – hefty fines are set in place to deter this practice

There are basic guidelines, but really no set of “industry standards” when formatting mobile advertising

Being able to view a website on a mobile browser does not mean a website is optimized for mobile

Adoption rates with mobile is not the biggest hurdle, as fragmentation in the market creates a bigger challenge

One solution for solving fragmentation is working with the cloud

Prioritization is key as advertisers must work to clearly add value to the end user’s mobile experience by being contextual and relevant

Application development may be a throwback, but it simplifies the end user’s mobile experience and helps them navigate the vast Internet quickly and easily

Location based applications are the future of mobile

The mobile industry is no longer just about early adopters, it has reached an inflection point where other industries now need to jump on the bandwagon

In summation, panelist Paul Alfieri, of Limelight Networks, stated that the key to coming up with great ideas and pushing the boundaries of mobile is to integrate the technology into your life and think that way. “Be authentic.”

The Marketing and Mobile Technology event was held in partnership with the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Marketing Association (PAMA) and the Philadelphia Interactive Marketing Association (PhIMA), and sponsored by DeviceAnywhere and Morgan Lewis.

Fresh off the success of the 3rd Annual DEMO Night, Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic was back at it with a strong showing for its latest networking event, “Mobility in Healthcare”, produced in collaboration with the Canadian Consulate in Philadelphia.

Close to 300 entrepreneurs, wireless mobility executives, technology and healthcare professionals gathered at the state-of-the-art Cira Center on March 15 for a panel presentation moderated by KYW Newsradio’s Dr. Brian McDonough, M.D., FAAFP.
Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic board member Chip Cleary welcomed the crowd and set the stage for the evening’s panel discussion by framing the mobile industry’s role in contributing to the overall efficiency of healthcare.

With healthcare being such a hot-button topic all across the United States, Cleary welcomed the event’s sponsor, the Consulate of Canada, as he introduced David Marshall, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner in Philadelphia. Marshall pointed to Canada’s investment in mobile technology and to the more than 3,000 healthcare professionals leveraging telemedicine as ways in which mobility can support and transform the provision of care in the region.

Marshall then turned the microphone over to the panel moderator, Dr. Brian McDonough. McDonough discussed how the panel would address the topic of wireless technology supporting medical service providers (physicians, hospitals, home healthcare companies, nursing homes, etc.) in their primary mission – delivering high quality personalized medical care. He also highlighted the concerns of the medical community in achieving “meaningful use” with mobile technology. He then turned the program over to introductions. The diverse panel included:

Mark Baiada, Founder and President of Bayada Nurses

Gregory Barnowsky, Chief Architect, Enterprise Architecture for Independence Blue Cross

Dr. John Kairys, M.D., FACS, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College

Howard Rosen, President of Life:WIRE

Harry Martin, Director of Advanced Technologies for Verizon Wireless

Highlights of the panel discussion included:

Speeding up communications services

How the healthcare field is using federal funding

Tapping into residents and “younger talent” that are more likely to adopt new technologies

Security concerns over how data is collected, mined, stored and deleted

Barriers for entry – “breaking old habits”

The importance of having the “right info at the right time”

The challenge of integrating into existing systems

The challenge of investing resources in applications that might not be “the next big thing”

HIPAA compliance issues
